White chocolate is essentially milk chocolate without cocoa solids. It was developed in the late 19th century by Daniel Peter and quickly gained popularity. In 1936, Nestlé introduced the first white chocolate bar in Europe, called Milkybar. This invention was originally driven by the need to use up surplus milk powder and cocoa butter. Although other versions of white chocolate may have existed before 1936, Milkybar became the most well-known. In the United States, white chocolate was introduced in 1946 by Frederick E. Hebert, who had seen similar products in Europe. As white chocolate became more popular, other chocolate companies began creating their own versions. By 2022, white chocolate accounted for about 10% of the global chocolate market.
