Green tea, camomile tea, and other herbal infusions are always a good choice but they cannot replace the fullness of taste and rich aroma of coffee. We can make suggestions about coffee substitutes to be found in our roastery so that you won’t have to live without your favorite hot beverage. They are made of barley and pea, do not contain any caffeine at all, and yet they possess the same taste as coffee due to natural added ingredients such as fig, witloof, wheat, carob, beetroot, rye, acorn, and molasses. Barley and pea are widely known since ancient times for their beneficial properties and have been used ever since as herbal cures. Barley formed the basis of Ancient Spartan nutrition and is an antioxidant with diuretic and rejuvenating properties. It helps reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels and is rich in vitamins (B3, B6), calcium, iron, sulfur, and phosphoric acid. A hot beverage made from pea first appeared during the Homerian era but disappeared over time as coffee was introduced to Greece. It reappeared during the German occupation of Greece as part of WWII as a viable substitute for coffee, which was difficult to come by and was considered a luxury. The pea is a valuable source of energy and vitamins, an aphrodisiac, and a diuretic rich in phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, iron, and vitamin B, K, E, and C.
