With its subtle aroma and natural, earthy flavor, mountain tea is the perfect choice for those seeking a traditional and authentic beverage experience. Each cup reveals the charm of the Greek countryside, offering moments of relaxation and enjoyment.

Let’s explore it further

In Greece, there are nearly a hundred different species and subspecies of mountain tea, with five of them standing out. Mountain tea primarily thrives in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, though worldwide, there are over 100 varieties.

Greek mountain tea naturally flourishes in rocky areas at high altitudes, where the unique microclimate and extreme weather conditions help the plants develop resilient mechanisms. In Greece, the Mediterranean climate is characterized by two demanding seasons: winters with frost and summers with high temperatures and drought. These challenging conditions result in the tea developing potent active ingredients, giving it its unique properties and distinctive flavor. Greek mountain tea typically belongs to the Sideritis genusand is known for its aromatic qualities. These are perennial plants with woody or semi-woody structures and yellow flowers, often cultivated to produce drinks with a unique aroma and taste.

A unique tea with ancient roots

The first to study and record the Sideritis genus was Carl Linnaeus, the father of modern plant classification, though mountain tea was known and used in antiquity. Dioscorides, a famous physician and botanist of the 1st century A.D., mentions three different varieties of the plant in his work De Materia Medica, one of the earliest texts documenting medicinal herbs. There are various theories regarding the origin of the name Sideritis, which in Greek means “ironwort." One theory suggests that the plant was named for its healing properties, as it was known to heal wounds caused by iron weapons during ancient battles. Another theory links the name to its high iron (Fe) content, though the first theory is more prevalent due to its historical use.

A tea with floral notes from the mountains of Fthiotida

Organic mountain tea from Fthiotida is a traditional beverage with a unique character, combining invigoration and enjoyment without the addition of caffeine. With its natural floral aroma and sweet, earthy taste, it offers a complete sensory experience. This exceptional drink comes from carefully selected mountain flowers, handpicked from the peaks of Fthiotida, and arrives intact in your cup. Fthiotida’s climate, characterized by mild winters and warm summers with ample humidity, supports the growth of the plants. The semi-mountainous areas of Fthiotida are ideal for cultivating mountain tea due to their elevation and natural conditions, enabling the production of high-quality organic tea that caters to both local markets and exports. Its minimal processing preserves the natural aromas and unique ingredients, delivering a pure and authentic beverage. As an environmentally friendly product, it returns to nature in a sustainable way. After use, it decomposes without requiring special handling, leaving almost no environmental footprint. From nature to your cup and back again, it is the perfect choice to enjoy energy and well-being throughout the day while rejuvenating your senses with every sip.

To enjoy the perfect cup of mountain tea, follow these simple tips. It can be paired with honey, cinnamon sticks, orange or lemon and can be prepared hot or cold.

Selection and preparation of the plants: Choose organic mountain tea, either in dried stems with flowers or in broken form. Opt for plants that have been naturally dried to retain their aroma, such as the organic mountain tea from Fthiotida. If using whole stems, lightly break them with your hands to release the aromas.

The ratio: For each cup (250 ml) of water, use about 1-2 stems or 1 tablespoon of broken tea. You can adjust the quantity depending on how strong or mild you want your tea.

Boiling the water: Heat fresh, filtered water in a pot. Once it begins to boil, lower the heat. Avoid over-boiling the water, as it can alter the tea’s flavor.

Steeping time: Add the mountain tea to the hot water (after removing it from the heat) and let it steep for 5-7 minutes. This time is ideal to bring out the natural flavor and aromas of the plant without becoming bitter. For a stronger flavor, you can let it simmer lightly for 1-2 minutes before allowing it to “sit."

Straining and serving: Strain the tea to remove the plants and serve it hot. For a more authentic experience, serve it in a clay or glass cup. If you prefer, add a little honey or a few drops of lemon for extra flavor.

Storing the tea: Keep the dried plants in airtight containers, away from moisture and direct sunlight, to preserve their aromas.

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy a cup of authentic  mountain tea every time, transporting you to the taste and aromas of Greek nature!
